Chilling, very true. The death order for Mangal Pandey even today, affects us.
This is a very innovative blog probably the most innovative I have seen in the last 2 years and meaningful too.
Are there any historically accuarate films about Mangal Pandey and the Great Uprising?
There is a recent Hindi film available on DVD called Mangal Pandey.A chap called Rudrasangu
Mukherjee who appears to be an apologist for imperialism has written a book on the subject.I’m not sure if either is accurate.
I am afraid Peter’s comment is highly subjective. If Rudrangshu is an apologist for colonialism , then , I am afraid we are all lap dogs of colonialism and imperialism as our forefathers had served under the British Government. In fact Sardar Vallabbhai Patel had no hesitation in calling upon the officers of the ICS who had very loyally served the British Government to work with even greater zeal for independent India. And he was not proved wrong. A great majority of them served the newly independent nation with utmost devotion to duty and maintaining at the same time a high degree of integrity and probity no doubt under the inspiring leadership of Sardar Patel, Pandit Nehru and other first generation leaders of independent India. In fact many officers of the ICS who had been knighted by the British were also honoured by the government of independent India with Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan etc.And that’s why India has not gone the way of Pakistan! Colonialism in all form is bad but the form of colonialism that we had witnessed in India was perhaps a shade better than what Portugal and Belgium practised in colonial Africa..The book of Rudrangshu is authentic , based on documentary evidence and is reader friendly, but the film is all trash like the great majority of Bollywood flicks.
Thank you for the clarification, Gautam.
During the course of the Raj,India’s share of global GNP dropped from 24% to 2%.40 million Indians starved to death. Some estimates say as many as 10 million perished in the 10 years after 1857.Vast amounts of architectural heritage, some of the finest in history was destroyed.Cultures were wiped out.At the turn of the 20th century literacy was 8% and life expectancy about 27 years. The per capita GNP growth over 190 years of British rule was zero.
Is any country truly independant today ? On paper yes but the major decisions are made in the capitals of the New World Order.
