”The principal occupant of this inner citadel was Bahadur Shah, titular King of Delhi, the twentieth successor of the illustrious Akbar. He was King of Delhi in name, and in name only. the empire had departed from the feeble hands of his predecessors before the English had become a power in India. The Khorasani adventurer Nadir Shah had plundered the palace in 1739. Less than ten years later, the Afghan Ahmad Shah Durani had repeated the infliction. In 1788 the rebel Ghulam Kadir had blinded, within the palace, the reigning Emperor Shah Alam. For fifteen years the city had, then, been occupied by the Marathas. the English had made their first acquaintance with it in 1803, when Lord Lake rescued the blinded representative of the Mughals from the tyranny of the central India conquerors. From that date the English had maintained representative of the Mughal in splendor and in comfort in the halls and palaces of his ancestors. There,in the citadel within Delhi, his will was supreme. It did not extend an inch beyond it. Wisely, then, the English- when, under the able guidance of Marquess Wellesley, they assumed the responsibilities of empire- did not restore to the Mughal which he had already lost. Less wisely, perhaps, they had permitted him to enjoy the shadow after he had lost the substance.”
Malleson. the Indian Mutiny of 1857
It’s the bottom line that counts. The British impoverished India, let 40 million starve to death, gave it a zero annual GNP growth for 190 years, reduced it’s share of global GNP from 24 to 2%.Destroyed it’s fabulous architecture and many of it’s cultures.Placed huge tariff barriers and
bans to block export of its sophisticated textiles to Europe.Used the post Plassey plunder to
finance its Industrial revolution.
”The King, old and nervous, hesitated. He had no reason for revolt. Ambition was dead in him. His estates had thriven under British administration. His revenues had risen from a little over £40,000 to £140,000. He enjoyed all that he asked of in the universe, a lazy, sensual, opium soaked life. Why should he exchange a musky and golden sloth, for the dreadful perils of revolt and war?”
Fitchett, The Indian Mutiny
He did,to his credit exchange his life as a significant poet for the dreadful peril of revolt against
the most brutal and greedy and monstrous power ever inflicted on the world’s people. He paid a
terrible price. The brutal murder of almost his entire family.
”the most greedy and brutal and monstrous power ever inflicted on the worlds people” .
What subjective hogwash!!
Have you no knowledge of Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Amin, Cortez, or the depravity of King Leopold of the Belgians?
It is clearly inconvenient to your racist agenda to recognise and acknowledge the greed, brutality and monstrousity of non British people from across the world and across historical and political spheres.
Any further posts from myself will remain relevant to 1857 and I will not be drawn into any further hyperbole with you, Peter.
Likewise,Feringhi.
I’d like to take this opportunity to recommend a good book.
