Havelock’s Army Leaves Allahabad for Kanpur/Lucknow

July 8

Major General Sir Henry Havelock with a small force of 1137 Europeans and 130 Sikhs and hardly any cavalry set out from Allahabad.

Rain fell heavily as the force moved off.

His object is to retake Kanpur as intelligence had reached him on July 2 that Kanpur had fallen and that all the Europeans had been massacred and that that the British garrison there had been decimated.

This is perhaps the smallest force that ever set out to save an empire.
