1857 The Great Uprising

An Indian Perspective

Ridge at Delhi : How do you mourn the loss of THOUSAND men?

July 14

I don’t even know how to mourn the loss of 1000, ONE THOUSAND, aek hazar, men; my hands tremble when I think of it.

But I have to share the news with you. It was a fierce battle. Yes, we outnumbered British, but most of our men are not professional soldiers, we don’t have the guns and ammunition, all we have is the will to fight.

The southern part of the ridge is very close to a built up area known as ‘Sabzi Mandi’, which has numerous buildings, enclosures, and clumps of trees which severely restricted observation. The summit of the ridge is occupied by four buildings i.e. ‘Hindu Rao’s House’ on the extreme south, the ‘Observatory’ and the ‘Mosque’ close to it, and the ‘Flag Staff Tower’ in the centre.

Our attack was on the Hindu Rao’s House.

Just to think that we lost a thousand in a day is too much to bear!

After the sunset, men were working for hours and doing the hardest part of all , moving the dead to the city in the carts.

All of India weeps with for you and all of India will continue the struggle.

Above is the picture of the ridge from the north side. And below is how a part of the battle looked like.

This is not a Sepoy Mutiny as British keep telling us; when a thousand men, most of them non soldiers die in the battle, it is a full rebellion.

  1. Kriti Said,

I choke up thinking of it. The task of transporting 1000 of your dead friend is something that I don’t even wish upon my enemies.

  2. Dube Said,

Who led the attack at the Ridge? Couldn’t be Bahadur Shah, he was too sick.

We should make a list of Indian generals and important fighters in the war. May be it already exists somewhere.

  4. Gautam Gupta Said,

..Bahadur Shah never personally led a column in the War of 1857-58; his sons did.

  5. Manisha Jain Said,

This particular entry is hair-raising. 1000 men, we can’t reconcile with two deaths in our families, leave alone so many in day. This day could be decalred as the Day of Barbarism.
