Havelock camps at Mangalwar
July 27Yesterday, Havelock camped at Mangalwar, 5 miles on the Kanpur-Lucknow road.
It now became clear that Havelock had underestimated the stiff resistance from the Avadhis and had no inkling of the intense hatred they felt towards the British.

I have passed through Mangalwar and don’t remember any historical signs of the events there.
We should protect and mark each and every place that touched this momentous event.
I agree with Suman N on naming all the places of historical importance and also protecting them. India is the only country where we take care of our monuments sporadically and on the whims and fancies of ministers whereas in developed countries like USA, UK and Europe, they are methodical and meticulous in maintaining sites of historical importance and also promote them as heritage sites.
It is a great pity that the majority do not share your views. I couldn’t agree with you more. These sites are of immense historical and cultural value and are a national treasure worthy of preservation and proper documentation, sadly, all too often the sites are neglected or vandalised or used as a latrine. ASI should get its act together!!
