1857 The Great Uprising

An Indian Perspective

Khajwa (Khujwa) battle lost

November 4

Rebels lost the Khajwa battle today. British had a lot more fire poser, the 9 pounder gun did a lot of damage and we don’t really have anything to retaliate with.

British experienced significant losses too; Col. Powell who commanded the force at Khajwa was killed.

For a brief period of time, it seemed that rebel forces might prevail but alas, it was not to be.

The cross marks the location of the battle in Khajuah (not to far from Bindki and north of Fatehpur)

Aurangzeb fought here almost 200 years ago (5th Jan 1658) with his brother Shah Shuja and it was one of the fiercest battles involving lots of elephants.

There weren’t too many elephants in this battles, but it was fierce for sure.

  1. Roshan Said,

Amazing - I have heard of the battle of Aurangzeb, didn’t know that actual mutiny battle took place at the same place after 200 years.

  2. Vipin Said,

I am a native of this place now called “Khajuha” but interestingly never knew about this battle during mutiny. Amazing that two battles were fought on same place at a difference of 200 years.

  3. Sepoy Sunny Kalara Said,

    Thanks for visiting 1857mutiny.com

I tried to use the names of place as it was referred to in 1857. And indeed, the google map now shows the new name.

If you live in this area, take some pictures of the remnants of either of the battles, and send it to us and we will include it in the blog.

I know for sure that there are some old walls still standing there.

    Best Regards.
